Four months after a woman was brutally murdered, raped and her body stuffed in a sack and dumped in a creek at Malad, the police arrested her brother-in-law, his relative and friend for the crime. The prime accused, Raees Qureshi, reportedly told the police that he raped his sister-in-law Ruby Qureshi after killing her out of spite. “Raees’ wife got along with Ruby, but he felt that she often humiliated him in public. He wanted to get intimate with her, but she turned him down,” said a police officer. Raees told the police he was not happy with Ruby marrying his brother Azad and was upset by her dominating nature. On January 9, the police found a naked woman’s decomposed body in a sack near a creek at Dharavli village; her arms and legs were bound. During investigation, the police learnt that a woman had gone missing from the Ambhujwadi slums in Malwani.

        They showed the imitation jewellery that was on the body to the mother of the missing woman, who identified them as belonging to her daughter Ruby. Ruby and Azad, a caterer, had tied the knot four years ago in Delhi against their families’ wishes. After their child turned two, they moved to Ambhujwadi in October 2015. Later even Raees, a vegetable vendor, moved into the same neighborhood. The police said that when Raees tried to get intimate with her, she complained to Azad, but he ignored her. “Raees hatched a plan to eliminate Ruby and roped in his relative, Isaq Qureshi, and friend, Shabbir. On January 3, Raees sent his wife away for some work and after Azad left for his job, Raees called Ruby to his place where Isaq and Shabbir were already waiting. The trio bludgeoned Ruby with a brick and strangled her. Raees then raped the corpse, the police said. To prevent the body from being identified, they undressed her and packed her body in a sack. While Shabbir stayed at home, Raees and Isaq took the sack on a bike to a deserted portion of Dharavli village and dumped it there,” said DCP Vikram Deshmane.

In March, Raees and his family left town. The police suspected Raees’ involvement in the crime as he kept changing his statements about Ruby’s disappearance and tried to mislead investigators. He was arrested on May 21 2016. Based on his confession, Isaq and Shabbir were held on Sunday. 

A magistrate’s court has remanded them to police custody till May 27 2016.

RUBBI QURESHI THE VICTIM

1. Five months ago, a woman’s dead body was found stuffed in a gunny bag and stashed in the bushes near Dharavli Village in Malad. But, given that the body was uncovered six days after death and in a decomposed state, identification of the deceased was a challenge for the police.

2. However, when police cross checked with missing persons records, they found that a woman from Malwani named Rubeena Qureshi had been reported missing around the same time. Qureshi’s mother was brought in and she identified her daughter on the basis of the jewelry found on the body.

3. After months of  beriefe investigation, Malwani police arrested Qureshi’s brother-in-law, Mohammad Raees, and two of his friends for killing the 22-year-old Woman.

4. A police official revealed that Raees confessed to his crime and named his two accomplices as his sister’s husband, Mohammad Isaf Qureshi, and a friend, Mohammad Ghulam Rasool. Further, Raees stated that he killed Qureshi because she constantly kept rejecting his sexual advances and insulting him. He also conceded that he was so furious at her that he had sex with her dead body.According to police records, the three accused hit the victim’s head with a brick and strangled her on January 3. Then, Raees had his way with her body before they put it in a gunny bag and dumped it.

        उन्होंने लापता महिला की मां को शरीर पर मौजूद नकली आभूषण दिखाए, जिन्होंने उन्हें अपनी बेटी रूबी के रूप में पहचाना। रूबी और कैटरर आज़ाद ने चार साल पहले अपने परिवार की इच्छा के विरुद्ध दिल्ली में शादी कर ली थी। जब उनका बच्चा दो साल का हो गया, तो वे अक्टूबर 2015 में अंबुजवाड़ी चले गए। बाद में सब्जी बेचने वाला रईस भी उसी पड़ोस में रहने लगा। पुलिस ने कहा कि जब रईस ने उसके साथ अंतरंगता बढ़ाने की कोशिश की तो उसने आजाद से शिकायत की, लेकिन उसने उसे नजरअंदाज कर दिया। “रईस ने रूबी को खत्म करने की योजना बनाई और अपने रिश्तेदार इसाक कुरेशी और दोस्त शब्बीर को इसमें शामिल कर लिया। 3 जनवरी को रईस ने अपनी पत्नी को किसी काम से बाहर भेज दिया और आजाद के नौकरी पर जाने के बाद रईस ने रूबी को अपने पास बुलाया जहां इसाक और शब्बीर पहले से ही इंतजार कर रहे थे। तीनों ने रूबी पर ईंट से वार किया और उसका गला घोंट दिया। पुलिस ने बताया कि इसके बाद रईस ने लाश के साथ बलात्कार किया। शव की पहचान न हो सके, इसके लिए उन्होंने उसे निर्वस्त्र कर दिया और शव को बोरे में बंद कर दिया। जब शब्बीर घर पर रहा, तो रईस और इसाक बाइक पर बोरी को धरावली गांव के एक सुनसान हिस्से में ले गए और वहां फेंक दिया, ”डीसीपी विक्रम देशमाने ने कहा।

मार्च में, रईस और उसके परिवार ने शहर छोड़ दिया। पुलिस को अपराध में रईस के शामिल होने का संदेह था क्योंकि वह रूबी के लापता होने के बारे में अपने बयान बदलता रहा और जांचकर्ताओं को गुमराह करने की कोशिश की। उसे 21 मई 2016 को गिरफ्तार किया गया था। उसके कबूलनामे के आधार पर, इसाक और शब्बीर को रविवार को गिरफ्तार किया गया था।

एक मजिस्ट्रेट अदालत ने उन्हें 27 मई 2016 तक पुलिस हिरासत में भेज दिया है।

3. महीनों की गहन जांच के बाद, मालवानी पुलिस ने 22 वर्षीय महिला की हत्या के आरोप में कुरेशी के बहनोई, मोहम्मद रईस और उसके दो दोस्तों को गिरफ्तार किया।

4. एक पुलिस अधिकारी ने खुलासा किया कि रईस ने अपना अपराध कबूल कर लिया है और अपने दो साथियों के नाम अपनी बहन के पति, मोहम्मद इसाफ़ कुरेशी और एक दोस्त, मोहम्मद गुलाम रसूल के रूप में बताए हैं। इसके अलावा, रईस ने कहा कि उसने कुरेशी की हत्या कर दी क्योंकि वह लगातार उसकी यौन इच्छाओं को अस्वीकार करती रही और उसका अपमान करती रही। उसने यह भी स्वीकार किया कि वह उस पर इतना क्रोधित था कि उसने उसके शव के साथ यौन संबंध बनाए। पुलिस रिकॉर्ड के अनुसार, तीन आरोपियों ने 3 जनवरी को पीड़िता के सिर पर ईंट से हमला किया और उसका गला घोंट दिया। फिर, रईस ने उसके शव के साथ अपना रास्ता बना लिया। इससे पहले कि वे इसे बोरे में डालकर फेंक देते।
